Our Story
The Origins and Purpose of S.O.U.L. Creations, Inc.

S.O.U.L. Creations Inc. is a non-profit, 501 (c)(3), community-based, educational agency. The mission of S.O.U.L. Creations is to blend academic, social and cultural elements to create a unique process of self-discovery that educates, empowers, and validates youth. The aim is to help them reach their highest personal potential. S.O.U.L. uses academic, social, and cultural models to guide youth in their process of self-discovery, self-empowerment, and self-expression. Our vision is that S.O.U.L. Creations will be an independent, interntional, and unconventional educational organization recognized for its ability to strengthen communities through their youth.

S.O.U.L. is an acronym for Spirit Of Universal Love.  It was born out of more than 5 years of traveling that one man took across four continents and into more than 20 countries throughout North America, The South Pacific, S.E. Asia, India and West Africa.  It was a journey undertaken by S.O.U.L. Creations’ Founder and Executive Director, Mr. Gilo Kwesi M. Logan.  The purpose of this journey was for Logan to explore himself through exploring the world and its variety of cultures, lifestyles, and unique perspectives on life and the world in which we live.

In 1994, Logan embarked on a 3 1⁄2 year journey, which was a continuation of a earlier 18 - month journey.  On this voyage Logan traveled to the Fiji Islands, New Zealand, Australia, Papua New Guinea, Indonesia, Singapore, Malaysia, Thailand, Laos, India, Ghana, Burkina Faso, Guinea, Mali and Cote d'Ivoire, where he lived anywhere from one month to one year in each country.  Logan entered each new country with no itinerary, contacts, or plan --- other than to open himself up to experience the human condition in a multitude of ways and experience the value of different cultures.

This experience furnished him with a critical look at himself and the world.  Says Logan, "I traveled all the way around the world, yet the greatest journey was the journey within."  As a result, many lessons were learned and experiences had which gave him countless opportunities to rebuild cultural paradigms, which many Americans have lost.  These restored paradigms are based on indigenous and contemporary models of education and socialization, models that are multi-cultural and inclusive by nature.  These lessons became the basis of S.O.U.L. Creations' educational, social and cultural programs.

S.O.U.L. is committed to enriching the quality of life of pre-adolescent and adolescent students through educational interactive exhibitions, as well as educational social and cultural programs. We service grade schools, high schools, colleges, community centers, and churches throughout the Chicagoland area. Our programs are designed to assist schools in meeting the K-12 Illinois learning standards (see page 13 for details). In addition, through S.O.U.L. Creations programming, children and teachers participate in literacy, history, and performing arts. Emphasizing self-development, our staff engages children and teachers in creative activities that:

• Enrich English Language Arts Skills
• Provoke Critical Thinking
• Foster Teamwork, Problem-Solving, and Decision Making
• Facilitate Cultural Fluency
• Develop Leadership and Character
• Build Interpersonal Communication Skills
• Encourage Artistic and Creative Expression
• Build Physical Development & Health

The S.O.U.L. model prepares students for world citizenship, providing a safe and structured learning environment for students of varying ability levels. It creates shared and lasting experiences that connect our participants to each other, to their own cultures, as well as to their own creative potential. Our staff engages teachers and students in experiential learning activities that address various styles of learning. The result is life-shaping experiences and positive self-identities. Most of all, students’ imaginations are ignited, instilling in them a love of learning and a discovery of their own personal power and potential to be agents of positive change in the world.
